HVAC technicians install, service and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The entry route is shorter than most licensed trades, typically six months to two years depending on whether you take a certificate course or a full apprenticeship.
The certification that is not optional
Handling refrigerants is regulated almost everywhere, because the gases involved are controlled substances under environmental law. You will need the refrigerant handling certification for your jurisdiction before you can legally work on sealed systems, and it is usually split into categories covering small appliances, high-pressure systems and low-pressure systems.

Get this early. It is a written exam rather than a practical one, employers expect it, and holding it before you apply moves you ahead of applicants who have not bothered.
Residential, commercial and industrial pay differently
Residential service is the easiest way in and the lowest paid. You work on domestic furnaces, heat pumps and split systems, often alone, often on commission for parts and upgrades. Hours spike in heatwaves and cold snaps.

Commercial work covers rooftop units, chillers and building management systems in offices, retail and schools. It pays better, the equipment is larger, and the work is more scheduled and less emergency-driven.
Industrial and refrigeration work sits at the top. Cold storage, food processing, data centre cooling and process refrigeration demand more specialised knowledge, and the pay reflects the smaller pool of people who can do it. If you want the highest ceiling in this trade, aim here deliberately rather than drifting into residential and staying.
The parts of the job people underestimate
- Seasonal intensity, since summer and winter bring long days and on-call work while shoulder seasons can go quiet
- Attics, crawl spaces and rooftops in extreme temperatures, which is where the equipment lives
- Customer-facing sales pressure in residential roles, where earnings often depend on selling replacements
- Continuous learning, because control systems and refrigerant regulations keep changing
A realistic first move
Book the refrigerant certification exam and study for it before you enrol in anything longer. It is inexpensive, it is the one credential every employer asks about, and passing it tells you whether the technical side of this trade suits you before you commit a year to training.
Then look for a helper or installer role with a commercial or industrial contractor rather than a residential one. Starting pay is similar, but the skills you build in the first two years determine which half of the pay range you spend your career in.
The seasonal earnings pattern
HVAC income is rarely flat across the year, and new entrants are often caught out by it. Extreme heat and deep cold generate emergency callouts, overtime and long days, which is when much of the annual income is earned. Spring and autumn are quieter, and in residential service that can mean reduced hours rather than merely easier ones.
Ask any prospective employer how they handle the shoulder seasons. Firms with maintenance contracts on commercial buildings have scheduled work year round and can keep technicians busy through the quiet months. Firms that depend on residential breakdowns cannot, and may cut hours. If steady income matters more than peak earnings, that single question separates the two.
Where the trade is heading
Two shifts are reshaping the work. Heat pumps are displacing traditional heating in many markets, which means technicians who understand them are increasingly in demand while those who only know older systems are narrowing their options. And refrigerant regulation keeps tightening, with older gases being phased down in favour of alternatives that behave differently and sometimes carry flammability requirements.
Controls are the third shift. Modern commercial systems are managed through building automation platforms, so the diagnostic work is increasingly as much about reading a control sequence as it is about gauges and refrigerant. Technicians comfortable with both sides are the ones firms compete over.
The practical takeaway is to treat training as continuous rather than something you finish. The certification gets you in; keeping current on heat pumps, new refrigerants and controls is what moves you up the range.
Tools, licences and the costs nobody mentions
Budget for tools. Most employers supply the expensive diagnostic equipment such as recovery machines and vacuum pumps, but technicians are commonly expected to own their hand tools, gauges and meters. Ask exactly what you are expected to provide before your first day, because the answer varies widely between firms and the outlay can be significant when you are on starting pay.
Check the licensing position in your jurisdiction too. Refrigerant handling certification is near universal, but some places additionally require a trade licence to work unsupervised or to pull permits, and some require registration with a state or provincial board. Employers will usually tell you if you ask directly, and it is better to know before you accept a role than to discover a restriction afterwards.
Finally, a driving licence is effectively mandatory. Service work means travelling between sites with equipment, and a clean record is often a condition of being insured on a company vehicle.
