Elevator installers and repairers build, service and modernise lifts, escalators and moving walkways. The work combines electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and control systems knowledge, which is why the training runs long and the wage runs high.

Why the pay is high

Three things hold the wage up. The safety stakes are severe, since a failure can be fatal and the regulatory inspection regime is correspondingly strict. The skill mix is unusually broad for a single trade. And the number of people trained each year is small, because apprenticeship places are limited and closely controlled.

Maintenance contracts also give the industry steady revenue regardless of construction cycles, which makes employment more stable than in trades that depend on new building alone.

The hard part is getting in

This is the trade where the bottleneck is admission, not ability. Apprenticeship intakes open irregularly, often through a union programme run with local employers, and applications can outnumber places many times over. Expect an aptitude test covering mechanical reasoning and arithmetic, an interview, and a wait.

Because places are scarce, the practical strategy is persistence across cycles rather than a single application. People who get in have often applied more than once and used the gap to build relevant experience.

What strengthens an application

  • Demonstrable mechanical and electrical aptitude, ideally evidenced by a technical course or prior trade work
  • Preparation specifically for the mechanical reasoning test, which filters out many capable applicants
  • A clean safety record and comfort with heights and confined spaces, since shafts are both
  • Willingness to work on call, because trapped-passenger callouts do not wait for business hours

The trade-offs to weigh

The apprenticeship is long, commonly around four years, and the work environment is genuinely demanding: lift shafts, machine rooms, heights, confined spaces and heavy components. On-call rotations interrupt personal life. And the work concentrates in cities and dense built-up areas, so if you live somewhere with few tall buildings, the jobs are not near you.

If you can accept those conditions and you are prepared to apply more than once, this is one of the highest-paying paths available without a degree. The barrier is patience with the admission process, not the difficulty of the trade itself.

What the apprenticeship actually teaches

The breadth is what makes the training long. You learn electrical theory and wiring, hydraulics for lower-rise installations, traction systems and cabling for taller buildings, mechanical assembly and alignment, and the control systems that tie it together. Modern lifts are governed by microprocessor controls with their own diagnostics, so fault-finding is as much about interpreting a control fault as it is about mechanical inspection.

Alongside the technical content sits a large amount of code and regulation. Lifts are inspected by authorities on a schedule, and installations must satisfy standards covering everything from door closing forces to emergency braking and evacuation procedures. Learning the applicable code is not optional background reading; it is the framework the work is signed off against.

Installation, service and modernisation

The trade splits into three kinds of work, and they suit different temperaments. New installation is project work on construction sites, assembling equipment in a shaft from the ground up. It follows the building cycle, which makes it the most exposed to a construction slowdown.

Service and repair is route work. You maintain a portfolio of lifts across a set of buildings, doing scheduled inspections and responding to callouts, including releasing trapped passengers. It is the steadiest of the three because maintenance contracts run regardless of whether anything new is being built.

Modernisation sits between them: stripping out ageing equipment in an occupied building and replacing it with current technology, often while other lifts in the same bank stay in service. It is technically demanding and increasingly common, since a great many installed lifts are now old enough to need it. If you want the steadiest long-term prospects in this trade, service and modernisation are the safer bets.

Preparing while you wait for an intake

Because admission is the bottleneck, the months between applications are worth using rather than wasting. The aptitude test rewards preparation, particularly the mechanical reasoning and arithmetic sections, and practice material for that style of test is widely available.

Relevant experience also strengthens a repeat application. Work as a construction labourer, in general maintenance, or in any electrical or mechanical role demonstrates you can hold a technical job and turn up reliably. Some applicants use a pre-apprenticeship or introductory trades course for the same purpose. None of it guarantees a place, but selection panels are choosing between people who all passed the test, and evidence of relevant work is what separates them.

Register your interest with the local programme even when intakes are closed, so you hear when the window opens. And treat a rejection as a data point rather than a verdict, since applying across two or three cycles is normal in this trade rather than a sign you are unsuitable.
